Took a break from making random things for The Child to make a random thing for me. I had cut the pieces for this a while ago--the fabric is what was left after making this hoodie, and the pattern is...uh...possibly the same shirt used to make the spiderweb lace edge layering shirt, so that would be McCall's 5058 from 1990. It certainly seems to have the same boxy, "wait, I probably could've gone down a size or two" look as that shirt.
But. I had cut the pieces, including doing Creative Thing™ to compensate for not having quite enough yardage, then...decided it was a bad idea and folded everything up and put it back into the cloth stash, with the idea I could cut pieces from them for some other project. Then I managed to completely forget that I had done that and thought it was remnant yardage, so was surprised when I got it out and found it was already pattern-piece shaped.
I decided, enh, might as well throw it together
I have not yet tried it on. I seem to remember deciding, after I cut it out, that the improvised section on the bottom front, with the fabric turned 90° and therefore cancelling its crosswise stretch ability, was a really horribly bad idea and would never work so just toss it all back into the fabric pile. When I considered it again, though, I realized the whole thing is so boxy and roomy that it shouldn't matter. This opinion might, of course, change once I attempt to wear it. For now I'm saying it's fine.
The sliver print is on the purl side of the fabric, which to me normally reads as the back, but it's where all the sparkles are, so front it is.
Simple band neckline, which I had apparently cut freehand and was really long and I had to shorten a few times before it worked. Single line of top stitching around it, with the bulk of the seam allowance trimmed afterward.
And, you might ask, am I calling this a layering piece?
Well.
I am too old and bulgy (among other things) to wear something so sheer on its own.
I suppose the back here and the front would have looked indistinguishable on the hanger if I hadn't inserted the lower 90° contrast.
Hmm...thinking about it now, it's also possible I abandoned this project because the fiber content is very likely highly synthetic, and my body chemistry doesn't always treat synthetics well. Ah, well, it was easy enough to make, and didn't use anything ~precious~, so no big loss if it eventually gets uncleanably smelly. (It's genetic apparently--I had no idea most people's sweat doesn't smell like my family's, la la.) Still, that's why I prefer natural fibers...
