I recently got some sweaters, on 99¢ day, with interesting textures but terrible construction, with the express idea of cutting them apart to use for a specific project. I got everything out to start that project, but decided, first, that I'd make some quick little hats from them.
Unusually for me, they're not proper berets, but more like skullcaps, with a closer, non-floppy fit.
I draped the front of the gray sweater on my head, and pinned around where I wanted it to end, which turned out to be right around 10". I used a 10" dinner plate to cut a circle, adding some width for seam allowance.
I used the sweater neckline bands--cut off the sweaters with a bit of seam allowance--for the hat bands. One of the sweaters had been a cardigan, so I sewed the ends closed on that one before clipping it to the circle.
I have worn the gray (with silver sparkles) cap a few times already (including right now.) (For the record, that sweater had been literally serged together to form the body construction. The cuffs and waistband had been attached with what may have been a safety stitch, so at least they were able to be removed cleanly; the neckline was also possibly safety stitched, but I cut it off with some surrounding sweater for seam allowance, instead of trying to fiddle with picking it off on its own and then enclosing the edge of the cut circle and re-stitching. The purple cardigan had the cuffs, neckline, waistband joined seamlessly, so I cut those off with extra for seam allowance, with more being used in the next project.)
