Quick projects: Masks and Scrunchies

I wanted to do some super quick and simple projects, so I threw together some masks

Y2k print for the kiddo, blue for Husband, and a bit left over from the last motorcycle jacket for me. They all have a layer of heavy embroidery stabilizer inside, and are lined with scraps of a high thread count cotton sheet I used for the backing of a bedspread. (We also got our booster shots a few weeks ago.)

And then, since I had the elastic out, I decided to throw together a few more scrunchies.  I'm still not prone to wearing them, but I do acknowledge their convenience.

I got into the small yardage stash and used a few pieces of silk.  I bought the paisley-textured purple silk in the late 90s.

Scrunchy luxury.

In the Cards

I decided to make a new mask a few days ago

It's the mask pattern from Craft Passion, that I added a bit of height to for Husband's masks...then forgot about that extra bit when I made this mask for me.  That means this mask has...very full coverage on my face.

As with the other masks I've made from this pattern, the lining is a high thread count sheet, and there's a layer of heavy duty embroidery stabilizer inside.

I used elastic for the behind-the-head straps, while my previous adult masks have used ties.  I'm still getting used to putting this mask on.

The vintage cartomancy print fabric was a gift, which very unfortunately has offensive fortune teller stereotypes scattered between the cards.  I had kept the fabric with the sole intention of possibly using the cards for appliqués, so I was happy to discover that I could fussy cut the mask pieces to avoid the people in the print.

And I was even happier when I realized I could get the Friendly Warning cards onto the mask. (and even more amused when I looked up what the Queen of Diamonds means in cartomancy, and..."friendly" is not it.)

Not a Morning Person

So, when the kiddo came in a bit after 7am and asked that his mask be washed so it would be shiny clean when we left for a thing at 9am, my panicked reaction was

1: It can be washed, but it may not be dry by then

and

2: So it will be faster to make another mask

(he only has one he likes--with elastic going behind the head instead of around the ears--because he did virtual school last year, and will again this year, so has left the house very very few times since March 2020, when the school year ended early due to a combination of pandemic uncertainty and a tornado destroying two schools in town)

So I looked at my smaller yardages stash for probably longer than I needed to--again, not a morning person--and picked out a relatively neutral cotton print, the bit of high thread count sheet left over from the back of the bedspread I made at the end of 2019, and a piece of the thrifted heavy embroidery stabilizer that I have used for almost anything but stabilizing embroidery.

Ended up here

And then realized that I probably could have just reconfigured the elastic in the reusable fabric mask he got in the "goodie" bag with his second vaccination.

Not a morning person.

Zig Zag

The kiddo had a dentist appointment yesterday.  He's been doing virtual school and so had left the property twice before this since the spring lockdown, and he didn't get along terribly well with the mask I made for him earlier, so I decided to throw together a new mask for him

taadaa.

Blips

Grudgingly made some more masks

did my civic duty

and finally tried out the Clover bias tape maker
which worked a lot better than I expected and now I should probably figure out more projects that call for half inch bias tape huh
