Five days ago, I went to the craft thrift store again, and ended up grabbing these jacquard 'tapestry' samples out of the free bins
I was hoping there would be enough of each of them to use as the front of a Very Early 1990s style vest. And there is!
It might have helped if I hadn't accidentally cut this one 90° off grain, but, overall, this was a quick and easy project. I don't know what Teen Me would have done if I knew I could make something like this myself, someday.
This was the first of the jacquard samples that caught my eye and immediately snapped me back to my teen love of not only "tapestry" vests, but also plaid. I would have been so in love with this combination thereof back then.
The buttons really are vaguely heraldic crest designs, and not skulls. I am not complaining about how skull-like they look. And brass or gold tone would probably have worked better with this fabric, but I still wanted to use pewter/silver tone.
If you look closely, you can see the vertical ribbed texture in the navy areas that should be running horizontally. I know most people wouldn't notice, I just want to confirm that I'm aware of it, but didn't become so until after things were cut out. I'm pretty sure that incorrect grain orientation is why I had problems with the front fashion sides sewing to the outer back lining sides, because the subtle (should be) horizontal stretch was in effect. It required some easing, but there's no obvious puckering.
I sewed the front to the side on one side by pulling all the parts through the other side and stitching by machine, then dealing with the remaining side by flipping the parts right side together and sewing as much as possible before turning it right side out and making an ugly machine stitch to close up the opening. Sometimes I do take the time to hand stitch those openings closed invisibly...but not usually.
The pattern calls for a set of D-rings on the back ties, but I didn't feel like rummaging around to see what size D-rings I have in reserve, so I made the ties longer and...well...tied them.
The pattern is Simplicity 9630 from 1990, which I have made before, and with the same lining fabric. Which I also used for another vest.
I don't think I have enough of it left for any more vests, but, at this point, I feel like I am committed to making vests from all of the other free samples shown at the top of this post (even as I continue to ignore all of the "perfect for a vest!" jacquard tapestries I've had for years...)
