Quick Comforter (sus)

The kiddo has worn two patchwork blankets to shreds in his lifetime, so I decided to make another one for him. The previous two were made years before he was born, so I asked if there was anything in particular he wanted in this one.

"Amogus," he said.

Now

This project was never meant to be anything intricate or complicated

and, normally, the idea of doing a custom Among Us reference of some sort would be more work than I'd want to do.

However.

When I got out all of the pieces to finish the purse I'd started in 2019, I noticed that one element of the overall print--which I hadn't looked at for nearly three years--now had a somewhat...suspicious familiarity to the motif

I showed it to him and he grinned and I got to (low effort) work

UFO Sighting

I started this purse in summer of 2019, got to the point of being ready to sew all the sub-assemblies together, then put it into a bag and didn't touch it again until yesterday. Sewing a purse that I do like in the meantime did not encourage me to return to this project with any speed, either.

However, I have been doing a tiny bit of stash organizing (and admitting that a lot of the fabric I'd picked out to donate, then decided to keep and sew through...nah, I really should donate, especially after a burn test showed that one--a nice shirt weight--was a polyester blend, which I would never use.) I decided to finish this purse so I could eliminate the bag it had been stored in, and here we are

It's not great, and it was as infuriating to finish as I expected it to be, and I have no need for another purse, but I still kinda like it?

Nope.

I made this over the last few days and fought it every moment and it is not good.

Technically it's fine, and there's probably somebody who likes it, but that somebody is not me.

Restrained Craft Shopping

A friend wanted to visit a local creative reuse thrift store, which was having a sale this weekend on cloth and  sewing machines. (The friend was hoping I could help her choose a decent used sewing machine, and she went home with a lovely, recently serviced Singer 237 that had a case, a few extra feet, and the original manual.  The car sagged noticeably when that machine was placed in the back.)

I managed to only spend about $10!

Marimo Faux

I saw these plush marimo moss (yes, I know, they're really algae) balls online a few months ago http://kumamushisan.shop-pro.jp/?pid=80450747 and realized that the fake fur I used for the ridiculous green coat would be perfect to use to make my own version of fake marimo, and, eventually, I did!

I freehand cut circles from the fabric and sewed them mostly closed with the sewing machine.  I stuffed them with bits and pieces cut off of the fake fur and roughly hand sewed (hiss) them closed. I brushed the fur out of the seams with the wire brush I use for doll hair, and here they are. (I'll eventually find a jar for them.  Maybe.)

Ties Dyes

No, I didn't do the tie dying--I used tie dyed shirt parts that were in the things the friend brought from the relative's stash (thanks!)  There were several tie dyed shirts that had areas cut out, probably interesting graphics to use for other projects, leaving 90% of a (seemingly) usable shirt, so I decided to combine things back into a single loud shirt for the kiddo.

A Different Bias

Unlike the previous project's bias aspects, this project is cut on the bias because it was the easiest thing to do.

How can cutting on the bias be the easiest option?  It can happen, for example, when you get a destash of someone's sewing supplies that includes a several yard length of fabric that's been cut and reassembled into a bias strip a yard wide (thanks again!)

It's also a lightweight, gauzy cotton, and I had recently been thinking about how nice it is to have the option of wearing loose, simple dresses in the summer.  So, I once again turned to the modified bodice and standard pockets of Simplicity 9153 (in medium this time)

It's loud, but should be lovely to wear on nasty hot days.

Slip Dream

I dreamed a very distinct garment about two months ago.

It was a patchwork slip dress, in muted yellow greens and warm dusky purples, in various textures--charmeuse, fine velvet, lace, lamé--and everything on the bias.  The textures were further enhanced with gathered lace set asymmetrically in some of the patchwork seams and on half the neckline.

Someday maybe I'll make it as it appeared in the dream, but, for now, it did inspire me to use up some stashed fabric odds'n'ends to make something way more brightly colored and less detailed

The slip dress in the dream was a work of couture art, impressive all around for textile use and expert construction.  This is a big honkin' garishly bright clown dress that makes me grin to look at.

Retro Gray

That lot of vintage patterns I got about year ago had been found because it included a specific pattern that I'd had before, Simplicity 5903 from 1973

And I just used it!

Gray A-Line

Today is the first day of May, a lovely warm early summer day, and I have made a fully-lined wool skirt.

Dark gray, too--so summery!
